Nothing about Vader seemed natural - not his towering height, his deep voice, his antiquated diction - yet despite those qualities and the mask and respirator, Tarkin believed him to be more man than machine. Although he had clearly twisted the powers of the Force to his own dark purposes, Vader's innate strenght was undeniable. His contained rage was genuine, as well, and not simply the result of some murderous cyberprogram. But the quality that made him most human was the fierce dedication he demostrated to the Emperor.
It was that genuflecting obedience, the steadfast devotion to execute whatever task the Emperor assigned, that had given rise to so many rumors about Vader: that he was a counterpart to the Confederacy's General Grievous the Emperor had been holding in reserve; that he was an augmented human or near- human who had been trained or had trainded himself in the ancient dark arts of the Sith; that he was nothing more than a monster fashioned in some clandestine laboratory. Many believed that the Emperor's willingness to grant so much authority to such being heralded the shape of things to come, for it was beyond dispute that Vader was the Empire's first terror weapon.
Tarkin didn't always agree with Vader's methods for dealing with those who opposed the Empire, but he held the Dark Lord in high esteem, and he hoped Vader felt the same toward him. Very early on in their partnership - soon after both were introduced to the secret mobile battle station - Tarkin grew convinced that Vader knew him much better than he let on, and that behind the bulging lenses of his face, whatever remained of Vader's human eyes regarded him with clear recognition. More that anything else it was those initial feelings that had provided Tarkin with his first suspicion as to Vader's identity. Later, observing the rapport the Dark Lord shared with the stormtroopers who supported him, an the technique he displayed in wielding his crimsom lightsaber, Tarkin grew more and more convinced that his suspicions were right.
Vader might very well be Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker.

Castelli d'Italia #187

Elizabeth was a discreet, persuasive lobbyst in her own account. London's key politicians and merchants cultivated her assiduously; so too did foreign diplomats. They did not because she was 'powerless', but quite the opposite. Beneath the emollience was steeliness, glimpsed in the brisk letters she wrote intervening in legal affairs, and in petioning her husband for favours on behalf of her servants. When Pope Alexander VI requested that his representative in England be given to the vacant bishopric of Worcester, Henry wrote back apologetically, explaining that his queen had already bagged the post for her confessor. Elizabeth could, it seemed, put her foot down. During the preparations for Arthur and Catherine's wedding, the Spanish ambassador de Puebla handed over letters in duplicate to the queen from Catherine of Aragon and from her parents. Henry wanted copies of each to 'carry continually about him'. Elizabeth refused. One set, she said, was for Prince Arthur, and she 'did not like to part with hers'; the resulting marital tiff was played out in front of Lady Margaret and the watching de Puebla.
Elizabeth combined a strong sense of family loyalty - including a love for her siblings which was, according to Henr VII's chronicler Bernard André, 'ferme incredibilis', truly extraordinary - with a strong awareness of the new political dispensation that she represented.

Castelli d'Italia #186

Outside again, Achilles was brisk. "I will see you at dinner," he said, and turned to go.
An hour before I would have said I was glad to be rid of him; now, strangely, I felt stung.
"Where are you going?"
He stopped. "Drills."
"Alone?"
"Yes. No one sees me fight." The words came as if he were used to saying them.
"Why?"
He looked at me a long moment, as if weighing something. "My mother has forbidden it. Because of the prophecy."
"What prophecy?" I had not heard of this.
"That I will be the best warrior of my generation"
It sounded like something a young child would claim, in make-believe. But he said it as simply as if he were giving his name.
The question I wanted to ask was, And are you the best? Instead I stuttered out, "When was the prophecy given?"
"When I was born. Just before. Eleithyia came, and told it to my mother." Eleithyia, goddess of childbirth, rumored to preside in person over the birth of half-gods. Those whose nativities were too important to be left to chance. I had forgotten. His mother is a godess.

Perlomeno mi conoscono tutti come Evangeline.
Faccio un cenno con la mano. "Salve."
